And, a recent op-ed piece in the New York Times recommends that the Obama Administration support the Sanya Initiative as part of his approach to Sino-US relations.  The Sanya Initiative is the work of PPI member, William Owens, chairman of AEA Investors (Asia).  In his keynote remarks, Admiral Owens, USN (Ret) and former vice chairman of the Joint Chief's of Staff,  introduced the Sanya Initiative to PPI members in attendance at the 2008 Summer Roundtable. The initiative brings together retired service chiefs from the US and Chinese armed forces for informal communications in an effort to foster transparency and understanding.    The op-ed piece is available here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/31/opinion/31iht-edbrzezinski.html?_r=2&scp=1&sq=Sanya&st=cse
